Opinion: Marco Silva could start 26-year-old against Man City, midfielder may be dropped

Alex Iwobi was given a full 90 minutes in the EFL Cup against Sheffield Wednesday, and his performance at Hillsbrough may have been enough to earn himself a place against Manchester City on Saturday.

Everton ran out 2-0 winners against the Owls and Iwobi bagged himself an assist on the night – he set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his second goal of the game. Iwobi started in place of Gylfi Sigurdsson and may have given Marco Silva a selection headache ahead of Everton’s next Premier League encounter.

The 26-year-old has scored and created three goals in six appearances since joining Everton from Arsenal over the summer, better than Sigurdsson who has contributed two goals in eight games. Fans haven’t been happy with Sigurdsson’s recent performances, so change may be coming.

Everton have endured a lukewarm start to the season and find themselves closer to the relegation zone in the Premier League than the top-four. Silva’s men have lost three of their last four games and now face the champions who have picked up nine points from 12.

Iwobi has been used in a variety of roles under Silva, but he did well in Sigurdsson’s position on Tuesday. Whether that will earn him a starting place on the weekend remains to be seen, however.
