Failing to move on £60k p/w fringe player will only lead to problems for Everton – Opinion

|

It seems no matter how hard they try, Everton just can’t seem to move on Cenk Tosun, and it looks like it will remain that way until the January transfer window.

This is after Football Insider reported that the Turkish striker will remain on Merseyside despite Qatari side Al Gharafa being keen on bringing the 28-year-old to the Middle East before the close of their transfer window next week.

Indeed, a follow up report seems to indicate that Everton are willing to sell Tosun at a nearly £12m loss, with Football Insider claiming that the Toffees’ will allow the former Besiktas striker to leave the Premier League side for just £15m, a significant amount less than the reported £27m the club coughed up for the Turk in 2018 according to Sky Sports News.

After a summer where Everton were able to ship off fringe players such as Nikola Vlasic, Henry Onyekuru and James McCarthy, it seems odd that the club wasn’t able to also add Tosun to that list of names, and the Toffees will likely regret it.

Of course, all signs point to Tosun being sold for good in the January transfer window, yet that still means another four months of speculation from the press, uncertainty amongst the player, and nearly £60,000-a-week, according to Spotrac, going out to someone that is unlikely to feature from now until the New Year.

The Tosun experiment has been a massive fail, resulting in just nine goals in 45 appearances across all competitions as numbers from Transfermarkt show, and Everton’s failure to move on the misfiring striker is only going to lead to more problems for the club as well as the player, who now must wait until 2020 to part ways with each other for good.
