OTD in 2010: Everton 2-0 Liverpool

|

On this day in 2010, EFC beat the old enemy at Goodison Park in the league, thanks to goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta on both sides of half-time.

Prior to the start of the 2010/11 season, Everton made a few shrewd signings, such as Jermaine Beckford on a free from Leeds United and Magaye Gueye from Strasbourg for just over £1 million, but would lose some players that used to be vital to the team, but had slowed down in recent years, such as Joseph Yobo and Yakubu Ayegbeni. EFC started the season slowly, losing 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on the first day of the new season. The blues would fail to win until the 7th game of the season, beating Birmingham City 2-0, sparking a lift-off for their season.

The international break then followed their first win of the season, poor timing for David Moyes’ side who were looking to build some momentum going into their next match, the Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.

Liverpool would also be in poor form going into the derby, only winning one game so far in the season, being on the same points as Everton (6) after 7 matches.

Despite both teams having poor starts to the season, Everton would go on to win the game quite comfortably, with Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill both getting on the scoresheet for the blues, helping their side to win their second game of the season and sealing a famous victory for the blues.

The victory would prove a real boost for David Moyes’ side, going on a 6-game unbeaten streak, before losing to Arsenal at Goodison Park.

Despite a disappointing first half of the season, the toffees would go on to win 7 of their last 12 league games, including a final day win against defending champions, Chelsea at Goodison Park thanks to a wonderful Jermaine Beckford goal.

The blues would end up finishing 4 points behind the reds, in 6th and 7th respectively, but neither would qualify for European Competition in a bizarre manner, with Birmingham City taking a Europa League qualifying spot for winning the League cup, despite being relegated and Stoke city taking the other for reaching the FA-Cup final, only to lose to Manchester City despite finishing in 13th.

The season overall can be seen as pretty average for the toffees, although their famous derby win will live long in the memories.
