Explained: Everton exit couldn’t have gone worse for 21-year-old

|

After struggling for form and playing time at Everton, Ademola Lookman joined RB Leipzig to get more first-team opportunities – the Toffees also couldn’t refuse a £22.5m bid for a player not in the starting XI. Lookman scored just four goals in 48 appearances at Everton and racked up only 601 minutes of Premier League football in his final season.

The 21-year-old had a successful loan spell at Leipzig in 2017/18 and made enough of an impression for the Bundesliga outfit to lodge bids to turn his move permanent. After being rebuffed for a year, Leipzig finally got their man in July, but Lookman finds himself in a similar position as he was at Everton – on the periphery with his role in the squad being unknown.

The England u21 international has made just two appearances for Leipzig, amassing only 41 minutes of playing time. As per WhoScored, Lookman has yet to take a shot, make an interception or create a chance for his new club. He’s made one successful dribble, attempted nine passes and made one tackle.

Leipzig are six games into the new season and find themselves second in the table with 13 points, one adrift of leaders Bayern Munich. Manager Julian Nagelsmann has relied upon Timo Werner (five goals in six games), Marcel Sabitzer (two goals & three assists in six games) and Emil Forsberg (two goals & two assists in five games) for goals, which is why Lookman has missed out.

The 21-year-old will have to remain patient for opportunities, but it’s fair to say his move to Germany could hardly have gone worse so far.
