When the signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson was announced from Swansea City, his arrival was the subject of considerable excitement and fanfare. The Icelandic playmaker had effectively kept the Welsh side in the Premier League, but his goal contributions weren’t as impressive during his inaugural season as a Toffee. Under the guidance of Marco Silva, this could be the 28-year-old’s breakout season for the club.

This isn’t to insinuate that Sigurdsson suffered a miserable first season as an Everton player, far from it, but a player of his undeniable class should be looking to contribute towards more than seven goals (four scored and three assists) in England’s top-flight.

During his last season with the Swans, Sigurdsson contributed towards 21 league goals – scoring nine goals and registering 13 assists. His contributions were so vital that the Welsh side had succeeded to avoid Premier League relegation. With that in mind, it wasn’t surprising that they were demoted to the Championship in his absence, last season.

At the age of 28, the experienced playmaker should be approaching the pinnacle of his abilities, and unlike other members of the squad, he is endowed with considerable Premier League experience. Throughout his time in the Premier League, Sigurdsson has demonstrated his worth as one of the division’s leading playmakers, and it would be brilliant if he could augment that status with us. He is valued at £27M by transfermarkt.

Even though only three games have been played so far, we’ve already seen the impact that Marco Silva’s presence has had on our creative stars. Richarilson has amassed three goals, while Theo Walcott looks to have been rejuvenated. Hopefully, we’ll witness a similar progression with Sigurdsson.

In his opening three games, he has registered one assist. Let’s hope that his goal-contributions significantly improve this season as we look to compete with the best in the division.
