Report: Club ‘keep close eye’ on Everton outcast, Dutchman has ‘interesting options’ this summer

|

According to Dutch journalist Chris Tempelman, ADO Den Haag will ‘keep a close eye’ on Maarten Stekelenburg this summer. The 37-year-old is out of contract at Everton and could be released at the end of the month.

In addition to Den Haag, Tempelman says Willem II and Heerenveen are ‘interesting options’ for Stekelenburg. Algemeen Dagblad via Sport Witness say Sparta Rotterdam are also keen.

Which club did Everton loan Cenk Tosun out to in January?

Stekelenburg joined Everton from Fulham in 2016 and has made 26 appearances in all competitions, keeping seven clean sheets. The Dutch international last played for Everton in October 2018 and has been an unused substitute ever since.

Jordan Pickford has been Everton’s first-choice in goal while Stekelenburg has been on the bench, but the 37-year-old will likely be replaced by Jonas Lossl next season and Joao Virginia should become the Toffees’ third-choice shot-stopper.

This might be Stekelenburg’s last move before he hangs up his gloves, so the Dutchman will likely take his time before making a decision – Sparta are 11th in the Eredivisie, Den Haag are 17th, Willem are fifth and Heerenveen are 10th.

There was talk of his contract being extended for another month until Lossl returns, but Stekelenburg is under no obligation to sign.
