Opinion: Everton dodged £15.6m bullet missing out on 28-year-old

Danny Welbeck

Everton were linked with a move for Danny Welbeck over the summer before he joined Watford, but the Toffees may now feel they’ve dodged a bullet two months into the season.

The 28-year-old has made six appearances in all competitions, scoring just one goal. Welbeck has fired blanks in four Premier League outings, however, and has registered just two shots on target in 206 minutes of football.

Everton are having their own problems in attack, however, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Moise Keane and Cenk Tosun scoring just two goals between them this season. The Toffees are currently 18th in the league and have scored just six goals in eight games.

Marco Silva’s men have netted only two league goals since September 1. They’ve lost their last four top-flight games and need a win over West Ham United on October 19 to move out of the relegation zone. Watford are faring worse, however. They’re 20th in the table and have scored four goals.

Welbeck requested £100k-per-week from suitors over the summer and went on to agree a three-year deal at Vicarage Road in August. The England international could set Watford back £5.2m-a-year and £15.6m by the time his contract is up in 2022, so Everton might be relieved they didn’t sign him.
