Opinion: Everton could miss out on £125k-per-week man, latest report is a blow

|

Everton were linked with a move for Danny Welbeck earlier this summer, but there hasn’t been any progress made in the weeks that have followed. The £125k-per-week centre-forward was released by Arsenal in June and now finds himself linked with Leeds United, Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Southampton which could be a blow to Everton’s hopes of landing his signature.

The Toffees are in the market for a centre-forward to potentially replace Cenk Tosun and Welbeck would be the ideal signing. The 28-year-old has no transfer fee so he won’t break the bank, he can operate across the entire frontline and he fits the bill for what Marcel Brands wants from his attackers – target man characteristics and enough mobility to run defenders ragged.

The England international may not be on his way to Goodison Park, however. Welbeck would surely jump at the chance to join the top-six chasing club, but the latest report suggests they’ve cooled their interest. It’s a surprise decision as the Merseysiders wanted Welbeck at the club in 2014, 2017 and 2019, but Brands may have identified a better option to lead the line next season.
