‘Strange’, ‘Class player class move’ – Many Everton fans react to 5 ft 9 ace’s transfer

Phil Jagielka spent twelve years at Everton following his move from academy side Sheffield United in 2007, but the former England international has found himself back at Bramall Lane following his release from the Toffees.

The 36-year-old centre-back had been training with Burnley in a bid to prove his fitness to a top-flight side having played just three full games for the Blues in what would prove to be his final term on Merseyside before his contract expired, but Sean Dyche had no plans to offer the 40-cap star a deal at Turf Moor.

Sheffield United have, though, and Jagielka has returned to his first professional home on an initial one-year deal, giving Chris Wilder vital Premier League experience at the back as the Blades look to avoid an immediate return to the Championship following their promotion in the recent term.

Jagielka’s first stint at Bramall Lane as a professional did not end well, however, as the Blades were relegated from the top-flight in 2007 before he would go on to secure a summer switch to Goodison Park, and the 5 ft 9 defender even ended up in goal against Millwall in 2004 and Arsenal in 2006, with United actually winning both games.

Despite moving on from Everton, Blues fans still hold former captain Jagielka in high regard, which is evident in how they reacted to the news of his return to Sheffield…
