Opinion: Ancelotti right to offload £100k-per-week Everton man but there’s one problem

|

Gylfi Sigurdsson could be on his way out of Everton after Carlo Ancelotti told the £100k-per-week midfielder that he was surplus to requirements. The decision is proving popular among supporters given how inconsistent Sigurdsson has been this season, but he might be hard to offload.

The 30-year-old joined Everton for £45m in 2017 and has gone on to make 97 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating 35 goals. Sigurdsson has contributed only three goals in 23 games this season, however, and has put in a number of poor performances.

Everton have spent around £58m in transfer fees and wages over the last two-and-a-half years and aren’t likely to get much of that money back. Sigurdsson will turn 31 in September, earns £5.2m-a-year and has been in poor form this season, so it’s hard to see many clubs making a move in January.

Ancelotti is right to show the Icelandic international the door, but he may not find suitors willing to pay. Sigurdsson has two-and-a-half years remaining on his deal at Everton, so there’s a real chance the Toffees could be stuck with the midfielder. Time will tell.

Should the club sell Sigurdsson this month?
