Everton should be taking domestic competition with the upmost importance – Opinion

Silverware has eluded Everton for nearly a quarter of a century, yet this season could see that change.

As well as having a favourable draw in the League Cup that sees Marco Silva’s side pitted against 20th placed Watford at home, the U-23 team are making good progress in the EFL Trophy, the often forgotten about domestic competition that League One and Two sides are pitted against every season.

And with the introduction of U-23 and U-21 Premier League teams to the newly formatted tournament, young sides from England’s elite now have the chance to add some silverware to the trophy cabinet, and Everton have a case of adding the EFL Trophy to theirs.

A 2-0 win against Burton Albion on Tuesday night secured the Toffees’ passage to the next stage of the competition, and their dominating performance against the Brewers should give cause for belief amongst Everton fans that their young side can go all the way.

Indeed, it will be a tough test for David Unsworth’s promising squad to go all the way to Wembley Stadium yet it is far from an impossible dream.

Everton have proven to be one of the more capable sides in the EFL Trophy this season, with the Merseyside club only one of five Premier League teams to be top of their respective group after two games in the competition as BBC Sport shows, and with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Ellis Simms and Anthony Evans all impressing, the Toffees have the quality to lay a marker down in the cup.

It might not be the trophy Everton fans expected to end their long trophy drought, yet a cup final at Wembley with a budding young squad is something any fan aims to achieve in any given season, and for Toffees, it could soon be a reality if they keep up this good form.
