Everton defender could miss Euro 2020 qualifier, manager admits “it’s not good news”

Seamus Coleman picked up a quadriceps injury in Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United and was due to be assessed before a diagnosis could be made. The Republic of Ireland national team have been monitoring his situation ahead of their Euro 2020 playoff with Slovakia on March 26 and manager Mick McCarthy has admitted that “it’s not good news”.

McCarthy told FAI.ie via Liverpool Echo: “Our thoughts are with Seamus now. Our doctor Alan Byrne has been in touch with the medical team at Everton and we will wait on their prognosis. It’s not good news as of now but, like James McClean, Seamus is a fighter and he will do everything he can do to be on the plane to Slovakia. We will keep our fingers crossed for him.”

Coleman has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, picking up one assist. He’s been a regular a right-back for most of the campaign, so his latest injury is a blow for Everton as well as Ireland. Carlo Ancelotti has trusted Coleman over Djibril Sidibe in recent weeks, so he’ll hope the 31-year-old isn’t out of action for long.

Everton are enduring a tough run of games too. The Toffees have already lost 3-2 to Arsenal and drawn with United in recent weeks, but they have meetings to come against Chelsea (March 8), Liverpool (March 16), Norwich City (March 21), Leicester City (April 6) and Tottenham Hotspur (April 11).

With Sidibe’s form spiralling of late, it’s bad timing for Coleman to be out. Ireland and Everton will be holding their breath to see what comes of the 31-year-old’s diagnosis.
