Conor Coady – emergency signing to defensive revelation

|

Conor Coady joined Everton on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers during the summer transfer window. Although he was originally signed as a precaution due to injury problems for the centre-halves already at the club, he is beginning to show evidence of why Frank Lampard brought him in.

Coady ended the 2021/22 season with Wolverhampton Wanderers playing and starting every league game of the season, whilst also scoring an impressive 4 goals. The Englishman joined Wolves in 2015, joining the club in the championship from Huddersfield Town. He would go on to play over 300 games for the club,  also being named club captain. He played for 4 seasons in the Premier League with Wolves, only missing 1 game in that time, an injury record that seems miles from what Everton have been experiencing recently.

At the start of the current season, however, due to the arrival of Irish centre back, Nathan Collins and the recent rise of academy graduate, Max Kilman, manager Bruno Lage told Coady that his game time would be limited. With Coady previously being part of Gareth Southgate’s plans in the England set-up, it made sense for him to move away from Wolves and join another Premier League side that could guarantee him game time ahead of the fast-approaching World Cup in Qatar.

With Everton losing all of Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate to injuries early on in the season, the potential introduction of Conor Coady to the squad probably would have seemed a no-brainer for Frank Lampard and his staff.

Since making his debut in a 2-1 loss at Villa Park, he has been an ever-present in the Everton line-up alongside fellow newcomer, James Tarkowski. Everton now boast the best defensive record in the Premier League, conceding just 7 goals in 8 fixtures in the league. A lot of this recent success can be credited to the new-found leadership in Frank Lampard’s squad brought by Conor Coady, something that really let the toffees down last season.

Coady even bagged his first goal for the blues in  last weekend’s 2-1 win over Southampton.

Should Everton attempt to sign Coady permanently in the summer?
