Ajax boss, Alfred Schreuder swayed Ghanaian International, Mohammed Kudus away from a move to Everton in the summer, despite significant and sustained interest from the club.

During an interview, Schreuder stated:  [via SoccerNews.nl]

“In the period that Everton wanted him, I told him: You are going to be very important for us.”

Everton were heavily linked with Kudus in the summer transfer window, with a loan move with an option to buy being the deal quoted to be close.

Although starting the transfer window quite slowly, the toffees eventually picked up the pace with 2 weeks left in the transfer window. Players such as Conor Coady, Idrissa Gueye, Amadou Onana and James Garner were all brought to the club after the first game of the Premier League season, a 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Goodison Park.

Kudus was rumoured to be close to joining the Merseyside club from Ajax and was reportedly pushing the move, due to the increased amount of game time he believed he would get from joining Everton. However, after the eventual departure of Brazilian winger, Antony to Manchester United, the dutch champions were left short-staffed in forward areas. Even though a deal was close for Kudus to join Everton, Ajax cut the negotiations short as they were reluctant to lose yet another attacker, with players such as Sebastian Haller also leaving the club to join Borussia Dortmund earlier in the window.

Since the collapse of the deal, Kudus has earned himself a starting spot in the Ajax 11, bagging 4 goals in 8 games already this season, as well as playing a key role in his side’s Champions League journey so far this season, grabbing a goal and an assist in their 4-0 hammering of Rangers, and also grabbing a goal across Stanley Park from where he was close to heading in the summer, in their unfortunate 2-1 loss to last seasons runners up, Liverpool.

Reports suggest that a deal could still go ahead that would bring the Ghanaian to Goodison Park, but with his current run of form being exceptional, it can only be imagined that some footballing giants will be sniffing around the 22-year-olds current situation.
