Two Everton players are eyeing the World Cup which is being held next summer in Germany – like you didn’t already know that!

James Beattie says he hasn’t given up hope despite not playing for England since 20003. His confidence certainly must be bolstered by scoring two goals in three games since returning from an injury plagued start to his Everton career.

He said: ‘It is very difficult for me to say that I have not missed it because I have. Hopefully if I play well for Everton the goals will keep coming, then if an England call comes again it will be a tremendous bonus. There’s always time, I haven’t given up hope as regards playing for England. I’m pretty confident in myself and what I can do, all I can do is keep trying.’

Meanwhile, Australian Tim Cahill is looking to use Everton’s recent good form as a springboard to help his World Cup dreams come true. Cahill joined up with the rest of the Socceroos squad following the match against Middlesbrough. Australia face a two legged game against Uruguay in the World Cup play offs. The midfielder has 13 caps and has scored 8 goals for Australia.

Cahill told the official site: ‘I fly straight to South America and play the first leg against Uruguay then straight to Australia for the second leg, then hopefully in the World Cup. The most important thing was getting three points against Middlesbrough and then kicking on and doing the job for my country.’

Adding ‘We did play them in the play-off (for 2002 World Cup qualifying) and we lost, but we are ready this time, it is something that has been a long time coming for myself but let’s try and get in a World Cup and play on the world stage.’
