Everton suffered a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on New Year’s Day and Gylfi Sigurdsson was one of many players heavily criticised by supporters for his performance. The 30-year-old struggled to make an impact at the Etihad Stadium and was hauled off midway through the second half.
Sigurdsson started alongside Fabian Delph and Tom Davies in midfield, but the trio struggled to contain City for long periods and didn’t crown themselves in glory. The Iceland international was meant to provide the creativity, but he saw so little of the ball and was replaced by Moise Kean when Everton were chasing a goal.
I worry about Pickford, out of position too often, beaten at his near post for second goal, Mina unconvincing, Sigurdsson consistently woeful, DCL needs to do more with his back to goal. Carlo will sort

Sigurdsson subbed off and #EFC look much better. Coincidence I think not.

Tom Davies is taking an awful lot of criticism on here after today's game, probably most of it justified. However, Gylfi Sigurdsson was anonymous yet again, making Davies' job much harder.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davies are a pathetic pair aren’t they.

Sigurdsson and Delph can both go immediately, totally awful yet again

Against City, Sigurdsson played for 65 minutes, made 35 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 90.9% of his 22 passes, created three chances, whipped in five crosses with 40% accuracy, made one tackle, drew one foul, made two interceptions, failed to complete a dribble and failed to register a shot on target.
The 30-year-old has made 22 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring and creating three goals. Sigurdsson has been inconsistent throughout the campaign and may have an uncertain future next summer. Due to an injury crisis in midfield, Sigurdsson has been forced to operate in a deep-lying role, but it’s not working.
