A few Everton fans have been hammering Seamus Coleman on social media for his role in our New Year’s Day defeat to Manchester City.

Coleman returned to the starting line-up at the Etihad Stadium having missed out on an opening role in our 2-1 win at Newcastle United on Saturday, with boss Carlo Ancelotti favouring a three-man backline away to the champions.

It was the Republic of Ireland captain’s eleventh inclusion in a starting line-up for one of our Premier League games this season, as he joined Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate as the last line of defence in front of Jordan Pickford’s goal.

The 31-year-old did not leave a glowing impression on all of the Goodison Park faithful, though, as some have shared that he was among our worst performers of the evening and that he was ‘terrible’ in the build-up to Gabriel Jesus’ opening goal.

Jesus broke the deadlock in the 51st-minute to notch his first of the night, by pouncing on Ilkay Gundogan’s delivery before cutting inside Holgate and curling his shot around Pickford, who was able to get a hand on the ball.

Coleman would later be hooked in the second-half as Ancelotti’s first change of the match, with the boss backing his men to net an equaliser by introducing Theo Walcott to the action.

Prior to the switch, Coleman had taken 56 touches, managed to complete 32 of his 38 passes and two of his three dribbles, while taking possession with each of his two tackles and directing his only shot on target, per WhoScored data.

The £70,000-per-week right-back also won five of his eight ground duels, but lost possession nine times, did not attempt a cross, could not find a teammate with three of his five long balls and committed two fouls, according to Sofa Score statistics.

In other Everton news, the club expect to conclude a £19.5million deal.
