Loads of Everton fans have been reacting on social media after Tom Davies suggested that our New Year’s Day defeat to Manchester City was a “setback”.

Davies featured alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fabian Delph in the centre of our midfield at the Etihad Stadium, after Carlo Ancelotti was forced to alter his plans at the last minute following a late injury to Bernard.

The boss had planned to start Bernard on Wednesday evening, but had to draft Davies into the starting line-up after the Brazilian went down clutching his left knee during the warm-up and was in considerable pain.

We went on to lose 2-1 away to Pep Guardiola’s champions, and Davies has suggested the squad were too slow to find their footing but is confident that we are still on the up after two wins in three under Ancelotti.

“We are going in the right direction,” Davies told the club’s official website. “Even today, we weren’t at our best but the lads showed great spirit to keep going towards the end and not let the game get away from us.

Should Davies start vs Liverpool in the FA Cup?

Yes

No

“We were more aggressive and creating chances [in the second half], but overall, we weren’t at our best and are disappointed with how it has gone.

“Carlo has been brilliant, and him and his staff have really helped us in the games. Today is a setback – but we have been in good form. We are all looking forward to the rest of the season and trying to get on a run.”

Bernard limping off before referee Andre Marriner had commenced the action meant the 27-year-old joined long-term absentees Andre Gomes (ankle) and Jean-Philippe Gbamin (quadriceps), plus Alex Iwobi (hamstring), in the physio’s room.
