Frank Lampard may have taken a sly dig at the Everton board in his press conference in the lead-up to his side’s trip to West Ham on the weekend, with the Englishman’s job potentially being on the line heading into the fixture.

Since beating Crystal Palace at Goodison Park back in October, Everton have failed to win a competitive game of Football in any competition, sitting 19th in the Premier League at the halfway point in the season.

Frank Lampard joined the toffees during the January transfer window of last season’s campaign. Despite keeping his side in the Premier League that season, he has failed to make many improvements to his team since joining, losing 20 of his 39 games in charge at Goodison Park.

His side travel to London to take on West Ham this weekend, with many believing that Lampard may face the sack if he were to lose the fixture.

In his pre-match interview, Lampard stated:

“One of the earliest things I learnt in professional football, and maybe my upbringing, was that the minute you make excuses or try to apportion blame onto something else, the minute you fail.” [via Everton Football Club – YouTube]

Although this answer was in response to a question referring to some of the Everton player’s reactions to how some fans reacted after their loss to Southampton last week, it has sparked questions over whether Lampard was referring to the Everton board with his statement.

News had broken recently about an Everton fan supposedly putting the club’s CEO Denise Barrett-Baxendale in a headlock after their side’s loss to Brighton and Hove Albion [The Mirror].

However, due to there not being any evidence of the event actually taking place, Everton fans now believe that their board were gaslighting them in order to direct blame away from the failing board and onto the fans.

This may have sparked a comment such as the one above to be made by Frank Lampard. But it is also understood that Lampard has the full backing of owner Farhad Moshiri [The Independent], potentially ruling out any such intent to be placed on the statement other than to answer the question proposed.
