Graeme Sharp – A Tarnished legacy

There are few players whose accomplishments at Everton exceed those of Scottish forward Graeme Sharp.

With 11 seasons in a blue shirt between 1980 – 1991, Sharp was an integral figure in Howard Kendall’s iconic Everton side of the 1980’s, forming formidable strike partnerships with both Andy Gray and Adrian Heath.

Indeed, in 426 appearances for Everton, Sharp’s 159 goals make him the club’s second all-time highest scorer, and the highest post- WWII, with only the legendary Dixie Dean ahead of the Glaswegian centre-forward.

The 62-year-old is also one of the Blues most decorated individuals, with 2 league titles, an FA Cup, a European Cup Winners’ Cup and 3 FA Charity Shields; Sharp was one of the great strikers of his day, exemplified by his tally of 4 top scorer records for Everton throughout the club’s most successful era.

His memorable strike at Anfield in Everton’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Merseyside derby has become the stuff of legend amongst Everton fans, and won the BBC Goal of the Season for the 1984/85 campaign.

Without doubt an Everton legend, few would have had a bad word to say about the former Scotland international, and many fans of a certain vintage would likely regard him as their favourite Everton player, but has his involvement with the current Everton board tarnished his status?

Promoted from a club ambassador to a member of the board in January 2022, Sharp’s image amongst Evertonians is now something of a yes-man to the current and unpopular regime, and while his accomplishments as a player earned him legendary status, the club’s immediate situation cannot be ignored.

A resignation from the board by the former Everton player would be a statement of solidarity with a concerned and frustrated fanbase, though we have yet to hear a sound from the ex-centre-forward.
