Ashley Williams was well and truly one of the worst signings made during the Ronald Koeman era, but his time on Everton’s books could soon be over, judging by quotes reported by the Daily Mail.
His permanent exit from Merseyside would be a welcomed move by all involved, as his believed £70,000-a-week contract places him among the club’s top earners and on par with Idrissa Gana Gueye.
Luckily, the deal signed in 2016 is set to expire in the summer, and the 34-year-old will hopefully no longer be one of the Toffees’ problems.
His recent comments, made while away with the Welsh national squad, would suggest the board have no interest in offering the experienced centre-back another chance to prove his worth at Goodison Park, either.
“There have been no conversations [with Everton] yet,” he said. “I’ll sort to my own future at the end of the season. It is like any other summer where you have to make decisions.
“I’m in a position now where I’m out of contract and I’ve been on loan at Stoke, we’ll have to decide what I’m going to do.
“I think it would be a little bit disrespectful, in my opinion, to Stoke, to start looking into that before the loan that we agreed was up. I’ll finish the season then see where we are at.”
When the 83-cap international’s comments were circulated online, it is fair to say that the Goodison Park faithful let Williams know he would not be welcomed back in any circumstance…
Retiring would be a good shout
