Any speculation that Maarten Stekelenburg was going to leave the club this summer appears to have been put to bed with him signing a new deal with us.
The goalkeeper has been linked away this summer with him evidently number 2 but it seems as though he is willing to stick behind Jordan Pickford and try and help him out.
One thing the Dutchman has over the England man is experience and if he can help share some of that with our number 1 that is no bad thing.
Certainly, we’ve left it a bit late to get another back-up in and so this deal makes a lot of sense.
The Verdict
Big Maarten might not play much next season but he is solid and it’s always hard to get a player that’s willing to sit on the bench.
Stekelenburg has had much of his career now, though, so he seems ready to pass on advice.
