Opinion: Midfielder won’t join Everton

|

Everton were linked with a move for Morgan Sanson earlier this month, but there hasn’t been any progress made in recent weeks which suggests the 25-year-old won’t be on his way to Goodison Park before the transfer window shuts.

When the Blues were undergoing an injury crisis in December, they were being tipped to bring in a new midfielder. Andre Gomes was recovering from a broken ankle, Jean-Philippe Gbamin was still undergoing rehabilitation following surgery on his thigh and Fabian Delph had a muscle injury.

A lack of fit midfielders forced Gylfi Sigurdsson and Mason Holgate to operate in the engine room for a brief period, but Everton will be overstocked when Gomes and Gbamin returns. Sanson would have been a fantastic addition to the ranks, but the Blues didn’t need more competition.

It’s likely why very little has come from the reports earlier in January. Olympique Marseille may not have wanted to let the Frenchman leave either. Sanson has scored and created six goals in 21 games this season, creating 23 chances, making 29 successful dribbles and whipping in 42 crosses.

The 25-year-old would have added creativity to the Everton midfield but would also have been overkill. The Blues need to bolster their defence.
