Opinion: Marco Silva could start 23-year-old Everton man over England international

|

Theo Walcott is fit and available for selection ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Burnley, but Marco Silva could opt for Alex Iwobi on the wing. Walcott has recovered from the concussion he suffered last weekend, but his form in 2019 has left a lot to be desired and Iwobi might be a better option out wide.

As per Transfermarkt, Walcott has scored just two goals in his last 28 appearances in all competitions and hasn’t made an assist since for 13 months. The 30-year-old has found himself behind Iwobi, Richarlison and Bernard in the pecking order, racking up just 105 minutes of football in 2019/20.

Walcott has failed to score, make an assist or create a chance this season. The England international has made one successful dribble, registered only one shot on target and has lost the ball (dispossessed/unsuccessful touch) every 12 minutes on average.

Iwobi, however, has shown much more quality. The 23-year-old has scored one goal in five appearances and creates a chance every 59 minutes on average. Iwobi has made seven successful dribbles (70%), has hit the target with 50% of his shots and has made five tackles.

It should be a simple choice for Silva. Everton can’t afford to drop more points after losing four of their last five in the Premier League, so they need players who are firing on all cylinders.
