Opinion: Everton should sign £65k-per-week Tottenham man to replace 24-year-old

|

Jean-Philippe Gbamin has been out of action since August with a hamstring injury and isn’t expected to return until 2020, so Everton might have to consider bringing in a temporary replacement in January.

The 24-year-old returned to training in October but suffered a setback in his recovery and underwent surgery. The 24-year-old was ruled out for another three months and will need a period of conditioning before being considered match fit.

If Everton wanted a midfielder to take his place while he’s recovering from injury, Victor Wanyama should be on their radar. The £65k-per-week man is out of favour at Tottenham and could be moved on in the coming weeks.

He’s made three appearances in all competitions this season, the last of which came against Southampton (September 28), and he hasn’t made the matchday squad ever since.

Would Victor Wanyama be a good signing for Everton?

Yes

No

Wanyama nearly left for Club Brugge last summer and has been made available for sale, but a loan deal may be preferable than a permanent move. Everton will only need the midfielder as cover until Gbamin returns, so signing him past next summer would be overkill.

The Toffees have Gbamin, Fabian Delph, Andre Gomes, Tom Davies and Morgan Schneiderlin at their disposal, so they aren’t short of options when everyone is fit.
