Opinion: Everton should recall youngster in January, loan spell couldn’t have gone worse

|

Joao Virginia has struggled for playing time at Reading and can’t even make the matchday squad anymore.

The 20-year-old started the season as Reading’s first-choice goalkeeper but is now third in the pecking order after making a series of errors between the sticks.

If Virginia remains on the periphery when January comes around, Everton have to recall him.

The Portuguese u21 international has made three appearances in all competitions for Reading, conceding six goals and failing to keep a clean sheet.

He made his Royals debut against Sheffield Wednesday (August 3) and shipped three goals over 90 minutes. Fans called for his exit on social media after just one game.

In Reading’s 2-1 defeat to Hull City, Virginia let a shot slip underneath him and was further criticised by supporters.

In the EFL Cup (September 25), Virginia made another error as Reading lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers on penalties.

In the Championship, he was dropped after two games and removed from the squad after eight. The 20-year-old has not been named in a lineup for more than a month, so Everton have a decision to make.

The Toffees should bring him back to Goodison Park and find another club for the second-half of the season.
