Opinion: Everton could end two-year pursuit of £40m Olympique Lyonnais man

|

Since Romelu Lukaku joined Manchester United in 2017, Everton have wanted Moussa Dembele to replace him. The 23-year-old has been at Olympique Lyonnais for nearly 18 months and has contributed 36 goals in 63 games. And with 10 goals in 13 Ligue 1 games this season, Dembele is one of the hottest strikers in Europe.

It’s easy to see why Everton want him, but the former France u21 international won’t be on his way to Goodison Park for a number of reasons. His asking price in October was said to be around £40m, but Lyon are likely to request a lot more money when looking at their record departures – Tanguy Ndombele (£54m to Tottenham), Alexander Lacazette (£47.7m to Arsenal), Ferland Mendy (£43.2m to Real Madrid).

Everton may have to break their transfer record to sign Dembele, but whether he considers Merseyside a good career move remains to be seen. The 23-year-old has interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, so it’s hard to see the Blues being on his radar. Dembele would be a brilliant acquisition, but Marco Silva already has Moise Kean, Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison at his disposal.
