Former Everton target discusses 2016 interest and hints at why it would never have worked out

Former Everton target Bjorn Engels has revealed he dreams of making a move to the Premier League with Arsenal, after a possible switch to Goodison Park never came through.

Back in 2016, Belgian publication HLN claimed the Toffees were regularly in the stands watching the centre-back do the business for Club Brugge as Roberto Martinez looked for potential improvements before his inevitable sacking.

The Goodison Park natives never progressed with their interest beyond sending scouts to Belgium, though, and the former international youth defender joined Olympiacos a year later.

Engels still dreams of moving to the Premier League, however, and has his heart set on Arsenal as Unai Emery seeks improvements at the Emirates. A move to Goodison Park, on the other hand, never seemed likely judging by his comments.

In an interview with L’Equipe, picked up by The Express, the Belgian defender noted: “I’ve been there a couple of times in the past [moving to the Prem], maybe next time is the right one.

“Arsenal? It would be a dream. But playing in England, it would be already top.

“She [his wife] is from Liverpool and all her family is a fan of the Reds. When Everton was interested in me, she said to me laughing: Everton is ok, but never Man United!”
