Football’s richest – Everton joined by Leeds and Newcastle

|

Financial giants Deloitte yesterday released their ‘Money league which looks at the world’s richest football clubs and despite the fact we can’t spend any money, Everton are in the top 20.

The ‘money league’ looks at club’s total revenue generated in 2021/22 and out of the 20 teams, the Premier League unsurprisingly rules the top 20 with 11 representatives.

Everton ranked at 19th in the league, in-between Leeds United and Saudi-owned Newcastle United. Everton’s revenue dropped by 2% according to Deloitte. After making €218.1M (£193.1) in 2021, in the year of 2022, the club recorded revenue of €213.7M (£181M).

Match-day revenue saw a dramatic increase with fans and spectators returning to stadiums after the Covid-19 pandemic. Increased revenue from broadcasting rights played an important role for teams, and with Everton participating in a relegation battle, Sky and BT Sports used that to their advantage which did help the club, albeit they would rather not be in the predicament.

In the previous 5 years, Everton have been ever present in the top 20. Finishing 17th, 19th, 17th, 18th and once again 19th. A poor league position last season affected the club’s turnover and with the priority to stay in the Premier League this season, they will need to improve next season and with a new stadium on the horizon, more revenue will be generated and with the hope of better performances on the pitch, we would see Everton climb the ‘money league’.

Premier League champions Manchester City retained their position at number one on Deloitte’s list with a staggering €731 million (£619.1m), followed by Real Madrid who for the fourth time finished in second place. Leeds United entered the top 20 for the first time in 20 years and rounding out the list was Newcastle United who also entered the top 20 for the first time since 2018.
