Brands can win back his Everton critics with £20m swoop that’ll fill Ancelotti’s major need – opinion

Everton’s summer spending spree is looking more and more like a dangerous mistake.

The club brought in no fewer than seven names, ranging from the free-agent signing of Jonas Lossl to a £34m splash on winger Alex Iwobi.

In the past week, injuries have amounted substantially seeing Jean-Philippe Gbamin ruled out for a further six months. He’s only played 135 minutes in a Toffees shirt since joining in a £25m deal.

Fabian Delph, who cost the club £8m, has also had his fitness troubles, playing a total of just 16 Premier League matches and has just been labelled as a doubt for the Merseyside derby.

Then there’s Moise Kean, who has been disciplined umpteen times and the likes of Iwobi himself and Djibril Sidibe, who have failed to inspire fans at Goodison Park.

Arguably, the 19/20 window was a disaster for director of football Marcel Brands.

However, the Dutchman can make amends and win back his baying Toffees critics ahead of next season if he manages to seal a move for former loan star and fan-favourite Kurt Zouma.

The story comes from L’Equipe, via Sport Witness, who claim the Merseyside Blues are keeping an eye on the Frenchman’s situation. It’s claimed that Carlo Ancelotti is on the lookout for a new central defender – no surprise given Yerry Mina joining the aforementioned players on the treatment table and Michael Keane having a poor season.

The Express have stoked the fire further by suggesting that Chelsea would accept a £20m bid should one come in for the 25-year-0ld.

Zouma is a very popular figure amongst our fanbase, we were all desperate to try and land him permanently following his impressive 2018/19 campaign.

If he is indeed available, Brands should absolutely sanction off £20m, especially considering that’s less than summer flops Iwobi and Gbamin.

You know it makes sense, Holgate paired with Zouma. That’s one way to kickstart Carlo’s first full season in charge.
