Everton are reportedly eyeing up a move for free agent Andre Ayew, following the termination of his contract by mutual consent at Qatari side Al Sadd.

The Ghanaian international spent 2 years in Qatar but could now make a return to Premier League football, having previously turned out for West Ham United as well as having 2 separate stints at Swansea City.

The 33-year-old’s Premier League experience may tempt Everton to offer a short-term deal, especially as there is no transfer fee, but in the latter stages of his career, Ayew’s best days are definitely behind him.

His versatility could prove to be useful, with Ayew capable of operating out wide or as a centre forward, and while it is hardly a transfer that will set Evertonian pulses racing, Ayew could provide Sean Dyche’s side with an attacking outlet that they currently lack.

Indeed, Everton are yet to make a signing this month, despite clearly needing to strengthen, particularly in attack.

The Toffees have seen numerous potential targets sign elsewhere throughout January but if the club end the window without a significant recruit, they would only have themselves to blame.

With a reported £45 million fee in the kitty following the sale of academy graduate Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United, the Blues have money to spend but with just hours remaining until tonight’s 11pm deadline, time is running out.

Ayew of course would not demand a fee and as he is currently without a club, a deal for the former Marseille man would not necessarily need to be completed before this evening’s deadline, but with an important fixture against league leaders Arsenal on Saturday, surely the club would want all business concluded as early as possible.

Everton had hoped to secure a deal for Ayew’s fellow countryman Kamaldeen Sulemana from Ligue 1 side Rennes, but look set to miss out on the forward to fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton.
