Catalyst: Everton can kick-start the season with vital result this week – Opinion

Six games into the Premier League season, and things are already looking bleak for Everton.

Seven points from a possible 18 and two defeats to two of the newly-promoted sides in the division see Marco Silva’s men stuck near the bottom of the table, and with Manchester City coming up next fresh from their club-record 8-0 demolishing of Watford, it could be yet another painful game for the Toffees.

Yet not all hope is lost. Indeed, tonight sees the Merseyside club take on the second side from the Steel City in the span of four days in the form of Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup, and after an impressive and entertaining 4-2 win against Lincoln City last time out, there should be some confidence in Everton getting a result.

Although their opposition on the night will be heading into this game with as much as confidence as the Premier League side with Gary Monk’s team coming off the back of a 1-1 draw with Fulham and a 2-0 triumph over Huddersfield Town, a win for Everton will be vital in their long-term success for the season.

Victory at Hillsborough will be the boost in morale both players and supporters need heading into already a crucial part of the season for Everton, with the Toffees facing the likes of City, West Ham and Tottenham in their next six league games.

The increase in confidence on the back of a good result and performance is unprecedented in football, for Everton are arguably the side in the English top-flight that need it more at the moment that the Liverpool-based club.

The start to Everton’s 2019/20 campaign has been underwhelming, to say the least, yet only they have the power to turn the tide in their favour and get the fans back on their side by performing on the pitch, and that can begin tonight against Sheffield Wednesday.
