Bryan Oviedo sends heartfelt message to Everton fans after ‘underdog’ World Cup win

|

Former Everton defender, Bryan Oviedo has sent a heartfelt message to Everton fans via social media after his valiant performance in Costa Rico’s 1-0 victory over Japan in the World Cup yesterday.

Oviedo joined the toffees in 2012 under then-manager, David Moyes for a reported fee of around £4.5 million from FC Copenhagen.

He would join primarily to play back-up to Leighton Baines at left-back and make 15 Premier League appearances in his first season, sometimes even coming on as a left-winger, but he would fail to score or assist.

However, in his second season, David Moyes departed to join Manchester United and would be replaced by Roberto Martinez.

Although he would only go on to play 9 Premier League games in that season, he would score two goals, one of which being a famous winner at Old Trafford against Manchester United, a feat the club has not managed to repeat to date.

After 4-and-a-half seasons at the club, the Costa Rican defender would join David Moyes once again, but this time at Sunderland for a fee of around £2 million.

He would stay at the Black Cats for two seasons, the last of which being in the club’s extremely disappointing Championship campaign, in which he scored 2 and assisted 4 in 34 games.

Since leaving England, the left-back has spent a couple of seasons back in Copenhagen before moving to the US with Real Salt Lake last summer.

Unsurprisingly, the 32-year-old was selected for the Costa Rico squad to travel to the World Cup in Qatar.

He would start their first game which would end in a 7-0 defeat to Spain but would put in a courageous display in his Country’s most recent game, a 1-0 victory over Japan, giving them a chance at qualification if they can beat Germany on Thursday.

After the match, Oviedo took to social media to thank fans and put in a special word for the fans of his former club.
