Everton have secured the permanent signing of midfielder Clare Wheeler, agreeing a 2-and-a-half-year deal with the Blues.

The Australian international had joined the Toffees on a season-long loan from Danish side Fortuna Hjorring last August but has now made the move a permanent one.

Signing for an undisclosed fee, the 24-year-old has made 7 appearances for Brian Sorensen so far this campaign, a manager she is linking up with for the second time, the two having previously worked together at Fortuna.

On making her move to Merseyside permanent, Wheeler expressed her delight at extending her stay with the Blues.

“I’m excited, delighted, just really happy to stay here,” the Australian said.

“Playing for Everton was something I had to work to achieve and I’m really thankful to Brian [Sorensen] for bringing me here.

“I’ve really enjoyed the past six months. To have the opportunity to stay here for even longer is perfect.”

Indeed, Sorensen has previously described Wheeler as one of his most consistent performers during their time together in Denmark, and the midfielder will be looking to recreate that form in the Women’s Super League, with her sights set on securing a place in her country’s World Cup squad.

The former Sydney FC star continued, “It’s one of the best leagues in the world and, looking ahead to the World Cup, it’s the place that I want to be.

“For me, I have to keep looking forward and be the best player that I can be.

“I’m happy that it’s at Everton and to be amongst this group of players. It’s really special and I feel we’re building towards something.”

Despite her Everton career being interrupted by injuries in the first half of this season, Wheeler will now have the opportunity to establish herself in the heart of Brian Sorensen’s side.
