Giovana Queiroz Costa, or ‘Gio’ as she is widely known, has been recalled from her season-long loan with Everton by her parent club Arsenal.

The Brazilian international was set to spend the whole of the 2022/23 campaign with the Blues, but has re-joined the Gunners half-way through the deal.

The 19-year-old made 11 appearances for the Toffees during her brief stint at the club, scoring 1 goal and registering an assist. Indeed, Gio became the first Brazilian player to score for Everton’s Women’s team, finding the net in the 3-0 over Tottenham Hotspur at the Breyer Group Stadium last month.

Once labelled as “the future” by her Brazilian national team coach Pia Sundhage, Gio won the 2021 Samba Gold Feminino award, which honours Brazil’s best player playing outside of the South American nation, with whom she lifted the prestigious Copa America Femenina last year.

Gio became Brian Sorensen’s tenth signing of the summer transfer window last year, as the Dane overhauled his squad, and it was hoped the Soa Paulo-born star could bring some samba flair to Walton Hall Park.

Indeed, upon joining the Blues in 2022, the talented youngster expressed her excitement at the prospect of developing her talent with the Toffees.

Gio saidThis is an intense and quick league, but speed is one of my strengths so I’m hoping to adapt quickly.

“I’m young but I’ve got a lot of experience. Any challenge that I’m faced with is great as it just makes me a better player. I’m excited to learn and see what I can do.

“To all the Everton fans, I’m looking forward to seeing you all soon!”

However, Everton fans ultimately had few opportunities to see for former Liga F star in action, and she will now re-join her parent club in the capital.
