The U21 international made a sprightly start to the game and looked determined to further make a claim for a place in the starting XI against Wigan after an impressive goalscoring performance against a Northern Ireland XI last saturday.

However, with the game barely a quarter of an hour old, Vaughan went down after a seemingly innocuous challenge from Preston’s Youl Mawene, and had to receive medical attention on the pitch.

Assistant manager Alan Irvine told Everton’s official site that Vaughan would be sidelined for months rather than weeks.

He said, ‘It’s not a long, long term injury, it’s not anything like his knee problem, but it is not something we expect him to return from in a matter of weeks.’

Irvine went on to say, ‘it is bad, bad luck for him. After being out for so long he did really well at the end of last season and was looking good in pre-season, so it is not just bad luck for the lad but also for the team.’
