Spirit of The Blues: Everton Legend Neville Southall’s Passionate Speech Goes Viral

|

Everton’s iconic goalkeeper Neville Southall slammed the Conservative Party and schooled right-wing political figure Nigel Farage on his own television show.

Speaking in his home town of Llandudno, the 64-year-old former Wales international spoke passionately about the need for greater emphasis on protecting society’s most vulnerable, adding that those in power have created a system in which the gulf between the rich and poor has increased.

When asked if he was a strong supporter of the Labour Party, Southall said, “Yeah, I believe in looking after the most vulnerable and I think that’s what any good country should be doing, and we don’t seem to be doing it, we seem to be loading it on the top.

“We should be looking at the bottom of the rung and the most vulnerable people of our society should be treated with the greatest respect and dignity and helped so we don’t have that society.”

Southall, who is Everton’s most decorated player and widely regarded to be the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the sport, has become just as influential off the pitch as he was on it.

The former keeper has always voiced his unwavering support for social causes aimed at assisting the most marginalised members of society and has in recent years used his Twitter account to champion groups whose voices may otherwise go unheard.

In a clip that is trending on social media, the ex-Everton keeper continued, “It doesn’t matter who was in power, the way we should be looking at society is how we treat the most vulnerable and at the moment we don’t treat them very well, do we? The electric has gone up, everything has gone up and what are they going to do for them?

“Nothing. There’s going to be people dying this winter and there’ll be people in power that won’t give a monkey’s.”

Not only did Neville Southall possess all of the traits compatible with a world class goalkeeper, he also has the traits that make up a world class human being.

And we love our Neville Southall.
