Something special about Goodison Park

After four years as Wigan boss, spending every week visiting the soulless JJB/DW Stadium, it’s hardly surprising that Roberto Martinez finds Goodison Park special.

But the fact that Everton are on the verge of equalling a half a decade old record, does point to something very special at Everton at the moment.

If Everton can go the next five home games without the defeat, then we will have gone through the entire 2013 calendar year undefeated at home.

That particular achievement hasn’t been done since 1962, so should be something that both current manager Roberto Martinez and former boss David Moyes should be proud of.

But while Martinez appreciates the importance of the sides home form, it’s the bigger picture which he is concentrating on.

“I don`t think you set out to achieve that as a goal. You just want to be very strong at home generally. It would be a real shame if we were to go unbeaten for the next five and then lose the first 10 games of the new year. That would be a problem for our aspirations. Roberto Martinez told The Echo.

He continued: “It`s just about fulfilling the potential this squad has, but of course Goodison is an important part of everything we`re trying to do. The support is incredible and they help the team enjoy their football. When our players are enjoying their football it makes them a very difficult team to play against.”

“Nobody enjoys coming to Goodison and it`s something we need to always nurture and use to our advantage. I`ve always said there is just something special when you walk into the ground and we need to use that. Of course to be successful your home form is always important, even in cup competitions.
