‘Should have sold him last season’ – These Everton fans debate what’s holding £20m ace back

|

Ademola Lookman has shown glimpses of his potential in Royal Blue, but Marco Silva appeared to find it impossible to place his trust in the England U21 winger during his first season in charge of Everton.

By the end of the term, the Charlton product had featured in 24 games across all competitions, but his minutes on the field only totalled 830 minutes – the equivalent of 9.2 full games.

Aidy Boothroyd also ignored the 21-year-old for this summer’s European U21 Championship, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Kieran Dowell and Jonjoe Kenny were all called up to his Young Lions squad and featured in at least two of England’s Group Stage ties.

Now, the lack of talk on Lookman earning a greater role at Goodison Park next season has sparked some debate on Reddit, with fans questioning what is holding the winger back from achieving his potential with the Toffees.

Silva had reportedly placed the London-born talent on the club’s transfer list in May, after it emerged that Ralph Hasenhuttl was keen to lure Lookman to Southampton, with a £20million bid muted.

Besiktas have shown an interest in the winger more recently, too, with reports suggesting Umut Guner met with Everton chiefs at the start of June to discuss a potential loan move that would see the Super Lig outfit offer up to €2million (£1.7m) for a one-season deal.

Both fees resemble a markdown in price from what the board were thought to be holding out for last summer, though, as it was claimed they were demanding £28million plus add-ons when RB Leipzig showed a keen intent on retaining Lookman beyond his loan spell in Germany and offered us £25million plus add-ons.

Lookman now has two years left on his Everton contract, and his uncertain future has led to these fan comments…
