‘Role model to youngsters’ – Many Everton fans discuss who should fill vacant role

|

Many Everton supporters have taken to the Grand Old Team forum to discuss whom they would like Marco Silva to give the captain’s armband to following Phil Jagielka’s release.

Jagielka had the honour of being our club captain for the last six years, having first been given the duties full-time following Phil Neville’s retirement in 2013.

The 36-year-old would only honour his responsibilities on four occasions in what proved to be his final year at Goodison Park, though, with the boss rarely calling on the Manchester-born defender’s services before his contract expired.

Instead, the Portuguese manager handed the armband to Seamus Coleman the most, with the right-back tasked with leading the squad out of the tunnel on 22 occasions in the 2018/19 season across all competitions.

Tom Davies, meanwhile, led the squad out the second most times in the recent campaign, with the academy graduate named our captain on five occasions, and likely has more in store given Silva has lavished the 20-year-old with praise in the past.

Leighton Baines and Gylfi Sigurdsson, meanwhile, led the side on three occasions each, and some fans would welcome the Iceland international to be given the honour on a permanent basis.

Here’s who these Everton supporters feel should take over the honours in the absence of Jagielka…

“[Idrissa] Gana [Gueye].” – Jimmy Grimble (June 5, 06:09)

“[Jordan] Pickford?” – Nyhus (June 5, 06:11)

“It’ll obviously be Seamus. Problem with that being the captain should be one of the best players, and Seamus isn’t anymore. If we want to challenge the top 6, we need better at right-back.” – St. Domingo (June 5, 07:27)

“Mick Keane. He won Bill’s weird award so is being groomed for it.” – Tigger (June 5, 07:34)

“Seamus all day long.” – IV(AC) (June 5, 09:39)

“Coleman went through four or five poor months (as did the whole team), but I think he will be our starting right-back for another couple of years. He bleeds the club. Very well respected at the club. A role model to youngsters. Kicks advertising boardings. Easy decision.” – Digger Destroyer (June 5, 10:58)

“Has to be Ross Barkley. Bring a blue home.” – KillenEFC (June 5, 11:13)

“Will be Seamus. However, if Coleman is injured/suspended, or even replaced this season, I imagine it will go to Sigurdsson… Probs our best player when he’s on his game and captains Iceland.” – Furey1878 (June 5, 11:55)

“Coleman, with Sigurdsson as deputy.” – Mikey_Fitzgerald (June 5, 12:41)

“Coleman, Baines, Gylfi and Keane or Gana” – Boss Silva (June 5, 13:54)
