According to The Sun on Sunday via Sheffield United News, Muhamed Besic has returned to Everton after his loan spell at Sheffield United was cut short.
The 27-year-old impressed at Bramall Lane and was in talks over extending his stay until the end of the revised season, but Chris Wilder has opted against keeping him and sanctions his early return to Everton.
Besic made 13 appearances in all competitions for United, scoring one goal. The Montenegro international had to bide his time before getting regular football, featuring just once between August and November, but he played eight times in a nine-game run between December 2019 and January 2020.
Besic didn’t feature in February or March, however, and won’t be signed permanently, so it doesn’t appear he made enough of an impression on Wilder. Everton don’t have a use for the midfielder, so he’s likely to be made available this summer.
The 27-year-old’s last appearance in an Everton shirt came all the way back in September 2017 and he’s unlikely to get playing time over Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, Morgan Schneiderlin, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Tom Davies next season, so a move could be on the cards. Time will tell.
