According to Phil Kirkbride of the Liverpool Echo, Cuco Martina ‘could wait’ until his ‘contract runs out’ at Everton before seeking an exit. The 30-year-old is out-of-favour on Merseyside and available for sale ahead of the January transfer window, but Martina’s only just recovered from injury so he may be short of suitors.
Liverpool Echo believe a January move appears slim and think it’s far more likely the Curacao international will leave when his deal is up in July. Martina has spent two-and-a-half-years at Everton since joining from Southampton, but the last 18 months have been spent out in the cold – his last appearance came in a 2-1 defeat to Burnley on March 3, 2018.
Should Everton offload Cuco Martina in January?
Yes
No
As things stand, the 30-year-old is considered a reserve-team player and has been frozen out at senior level. Everton wanted to sell Martina over the summer and will certainly be open to offers in January if he’s fit – it all depends on his recovery and if clubs are willing to pay £2m and around £35k-per-week in wages.
Everton would prefer to get some money back of the defender, but it remains to be seen if suitors will lodge bids in the coming weeks.
