Report: Ashley Williams transfer update

Ashley Williams has been a free agent for a number of weeks after his release from Everton, but the 34-year-old may have finally found himself a new club after turning down interest from the Middle East, MLS and Turkey – Bristol City. English clubs are able to sign free transfers past the September 2 deadline.

According to Phil Cadden of The Sun, City are leading a three-year race for Williams’ signature. Reading and Wigan Athletic were reportedly keen but have been turned down. The Robins’ hopes of promotion to the Premier League may be the reason behind his decision.

After selling Adam Webster to Brighton & Hove Albion, City have been in need of an experienced centre-back – Williams has made 241 appearances in the Premier League and 171 in the Championship. His contract at Everton expired this summer, ending a three-year stay on Merseyside.

The Welsh international made 73 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees but spent his last year on loan at Stoke City after falling down the pecking order under Marco Silva. He’s now deemed Championship quality but would still be one of the best centre-backs in the second tier.
