Pundit Doesn’t “Feel” That Everton Man Is A Star Player Although He Likes Him

|

It’s personal opinion when it comes to the thoughts of pundits, but I find myself agreeing with Paul Merson as much as I do disagreeing or simply being entertained with his opinions and choice of words, but I can’t agree with his comments about Andre Gomes at the weekend.

After some brighter form and results of late, it was the Everton we’ve seen all too often in the last few months and what could go wrong, did, as we fell to defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage last Saturday.

With Gomes being picked out for an off the ball incident with Aleksandar Mitrovic and subsequently being handed a three game ban retrospectively by the Football Association, Merson seemed to somewhat contradict himself when discussing our on loan 25-year-old.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme, Merson said of the Barcelona player.

“I like him. There is talk of Tottenham coming in for him for £30million. Again, this is what happens, you have a couple of good games and other teams look at the loan situation and think ‘Oh, he’s only on loan, I’ll take him’. He’s a Tottenham player. “He’s there now and if he keeps on getting the confidence, but he does get brought off now and again when he isn’t playing too well. He’s not one of them players who you field the team around. You don’t feel that he’s the star man.”

He’s made the adjustment to the top flight fine in my opinion and he’s done a good job in midfield despite our struggles, but it seems unfair to single him out given the problems we’ve had all season long.
