Everton suffered a penalty-shootout loss in the EFL Cup against Leicester City on Wednesday after drawing 2-2 after extra time. The Toffees were 2-0 down at half-time and were second-best on the night, leading to a number of players coming in for criticism.
Yerry Mina was one of them. The 25-year-old was criticised for missing two chances to score and for a below-par performance at the back. He started alongside Michael Keane at centre-back, but the Everton duo didn’t crown themselves in glory.

Yerry Mina and Michael Keane do not possess even half a footballing brain between them, the are your absolute bog standard centre halves. One or both need to go.#EFC #EVELEI

In case anyone was still under any delusion, #Brands has to welcome a new centre half on Jan 1st. Mina and Keane simply not good and consistent enough #efc

Mina’s been fine recently. Horrible today though

Against Leicester, Mina played for a full 90 minutes, made 54 touches, won one aerial duel, had one shot, completed 80.5% of his 41 passes, made three tackles, blocked one shot and made two clearances. He failed to shut out the Foxes, however, and Everton bowed out of the EFL Cup at the quarter-final stage as a result.
Mina has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season, racking up 1571 minutes of football. He’s been on the winning team six times across the board, keeping only five clean sheets, and could find his position under threat if Everton strengthen their defence in the January transfer window.
