He was far from adored by a majority of the Everton fanbase by the end of his time at Goodison Park, but Steve Walsh has managed to put a smile on the faces of a few Blues supporters after he was linked with a job at Manchester United.

The Daily Mail understand the Old Trafford natives have held discussions with 54-year-old over becoming their new Director of Football, having spent the past year out of the game after being replaced by Marcel Brands at Everton last summer.

Walsh played a key role in unearthing hidden gems while with Leicester City, as he played a vital part in the Foxes bringing N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez to the King Power Stadium before they would go on to win the Premier League in a true fairy-tale story.

Over £150million was spent with little success during his time as our Sporting Director, though, as flops like Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez, Cenk Tosun and Ashley Williams arrived on Merseyside while Sam Allardyce and Ronald Koeman were at the helm.

His time with us tainted his reputation slightly, but leading and influential figures at Manchester United are thought to have given Walsh their backing. That does not include Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward, however, who would prefer former Red Devils midfielder Darren Fletcher as he could help re-instil the values of the Alex Ferguson era alongside manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
