‘Peak Everton banter that’: These Toffees fans refuse to be fooled by former manager’s comments

Everton fans have been reacting to a bold claim by Sam Allardyce, where the former Toffees manager suggested he was in the hunt to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

Allardyce was speaking on talkSPORT’s breakfast show about who the club were targeting during his time in charge at Goodison Park, and suggested that Aubameyang was near the top of his list.

In the end, the Toffees were forced to admit defeat as they could not complete a deal before he signed for Arsenal, something that the former West Ham and Bolton boss put down to the club’s spending prior to his arrival.

Everton had just spent £45million in the summer to bring Gylfi Sigurdsson to Goodison Park, and Allardyce told talkSPORT: “Aubameyang was desperate to come to the Premier League and we didn’t really know if it was definitely a yes [to Everton] or not – but it was probably not.

“It was always going to be too much money for January, because of what the club spent previous to me arriving.”

Naturally, Everton fans have not taken their former manager’s comments to heart…
