Opinion: Everton should consider 26-year-old Newcastle man to solve defensive crisis

|

Everton are expected to plump for a central defender when the January transfer window opens after letting Phil Jagielka & Ashley Williams leave without bringing a replacement.

The Toffees have Michael Keane, Yerry Mina & Mason Holgate in the first-team and would have to plump for Lewis Gibson or Morgan Feeney from the u23s as cover.

One player who may be on their radar is Jamaal Lascelles. The 26-year-old was linked with a move to Everton in 2018 before they signed Yerry Mina and would improve the first-team.

Newcastle may not want to let him go, however. The former England u21 international has made 12 appearances from a possible 14 in the Premier League this season and is skipper under Steve Bruce.

Everton may have to pay a tidy sum to procure his signature unless Lascelles pushes for a move away from St James’ Park. The 26-year-old may cost in excess of £30m which would make him the most expensive defender signed by the Toffees.

Should Everton sign Jamaal Lascelles in January?

Yes

No

Marco Silva needs to strengthen at the back in January, but it remains to be seen if they’ll return for the Newcastle man.
