Opinion: Everton missed a trick not signing £75k-per-week Crystal Palace man for free

Everton could be in for a centre-back during the January transfer window after failing to replace Phil Jagielka & Ashley Williams over the summer, but did the Toffees miss a trick in not signing Gary Cahill in August? The 33-year-old was released by Chelsea at the end of last season and joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer months later.

Palace beat out interest from Burnley, West Ham United and Aston Villa to land Cahill on a two-year-deal worth £75k-per-week, but could Everton have pipped the Eagles to his signature had they made a more over the summer? The veteran defender has since been a regular at Selhurst Park and would have been a good option for Marco Silva.

Michael Keane has been short of form this season while Yerry Mina has struggled with injury. Mason Holgate has impressed of late, but Everton don’t have anybody else to call upon at centre-back. The likes of Lewis Gibson and Morgan Feeney are still reserve team players and may not be ready for first-team football.

Should Mason Holgate keep his place at centre-back?

Everton left themselves thin at the back and may regret not making a move for Cahill when they had the chance. Who they’ll look to sign in January remains to be seen.
