“Your time will come” – These Everton fans react to stalwart’s “brilliant” remark

|

A few Everton fans have been reacting on social media to Anthony Gordon’s recent remark regarding his chances of breaking into Marco Silva’s first-team.

Gordon became our first 2001-born player when he made his senior debut as a late substitute in a Europa League Group Stage win over Cypriot side Apollon Limassol FC back in December 2017, but that remains his sole first-team appearance to date.

The 18-year-old did not feature in any matchday teamsheets over the 2018/19 season, either, but travelled with the squad to Southampton prior to the international break and was listed among the substitutes for our 2-1 win.

Despite not featuring at all last term, the England youth international penned his first professional contract in March, tieing the stalwart to the club until at least the summer of 2023.

He was rewarded with the contract for his efforts under David Unsworth in the Under 23s, with whom he won the youth double in 18/19 by adding the Premier League Cup to their Premier League 2 Division 1 crown.

But minutes in the junior side are one thing, and Gordon has his eyes set on earning some with the first-team, even if he is ignoring the hype around his potential.

“I still don’t think that [I’ve made it as a footballer],” Gordon told EvertonTV. “I just try to enjoy myself and get better every day. You never sit down and think, ‘I have a chance’.

“That is for other people to say. I am just trying to keep getting better and progressing. I haven’t played one game competitively for the first team [other than two minutes against Apollon Limassol].

“To be around [the senior squad] it shows I am progressing well, but I am not there yet. I am not starting for the first-team and I still have so much to do.”

Gordon has scored five goals in eight PL2 fixtures and once in the EFL Trophy already this term, having only scored once in 14 youth league outings last season.
